The Mormon Battalion Visitor Center
We went to the Mormon Battalion Visitor Center in Old Town San Diego while we were there, and we had a blast. They have totally re-done the visitor center and it's the best one we've ever been to. It has a very interactive tour that the kids and adults loved. Plus, you get to mine for gold in the courtyard outside. But the best part of the tour is that there are these portraits on the wall of people representing some of the members of the Battalion, and then the pictures start talking and moving, and they interact with the tour guide (think moving photographs, Harry Potter style). Unfortunately I didn't get the video camera out soon enough to capture the intro part with the moving photos, but I caught the end of them before we moved on to the next room. Anyway, it was a pretty fun day. Add to that the fun historic sites in Old Town, and eating a nice lunch at Old Town Mexican Cafe (I think that's what it's called) -- it's nice to have options for real Mexican food again, there's not much to choose from out here. It was a nice day. One thing I'm excited about when we move there is exploring San Diego and the surrounding areas, and finding all the fun things to do there (and re-discovering the places I enjoyed as a kid). Anyway, if you happen to be in San Diego, look up the Mormon Battalion Visitor Center, it's way fun, perfect for families, a short walk to other historical sites, shops, and restaurants, and it's totally free.
