Playgroup at Wheeler Farm

A couple weeks ago we went to the playgroup organized by Melissa Maxwell, the wife of another intern at Michael’s hospital. I was so glad that we were able to go – I had been hoping to get together with the other interns’ wives since we got here. No one else was able to come to the playgroup that week, but we had lots of fun. Kolby had preschool that day, but since Eli only has preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays he got to go with Camden and Isaac. We went to Wheeler Historic Farm. We had been there once before, when we first moved here, and I have to say that I enjoyed it much more on a nice Fall day with their pumpkin patch and the leaves starting to change colors than I did on the hot, sticky day that we went last time in the summer. Eli and Camden had fun with Melissa’s daughter, Chloe, and the boys liked the tree house and the farm animals. And by the end of the playgroup Isaac must have been all tired out because he fell asleep in his stroller on the way out to the car.

The Splash Park

We went several times to the ward playgroup at the splash park in 4S Ranch. The water at the splash park would turn off everyone once in a while and the kids would have to go push a button to turn it back on. One of the times that the water turned off Isaac got up the courage to crawl over to one of the water toys, but when the water turned back on and sprayed him, he had had enough. The other boys all enjoyed the splash park and the big three-story playground right next to it.

Home Sick

This week was nice, especially since it was basically Michael’s last week of his plastic surgery rotation (officially, his last day is today). Then he is mostly done with medical school. He planned one if his vacation months in April so that we would be able to get ready for the move, and then in May he has a course called ‘Preparing for Residency’ that only lasts a couple weeks until he graduates on May 16th! So, even though he is getting tired of the very early mornings he’s had this month, it will all be over soon. And then he will get to catch up on some sleep (at least for a couple days, until we start using the month of April for packing, cleaning, organizing, and figuring out all the details for the move). Right now I think the plan is to try to find a storage unit to store the majority of our stuff in Rochester for a year, and just take the necessities with us to Salt Lake, so I have been attempting to make lists of everything we own, separating things into one column for taking to Salt Lake and another column for storing until we get to Rochester, and trying to figure out which items we can leave behind. It is kind of hard to try to plan what we could possibly need in an entire year, but we’ll figure it out, I guess.

So, on Monday the Kearls watched our boys so Michael and I could go to the annual meeting that the school puts on about financial planning and buying a house for graduating students. We felt like it wasn’t the best use of our time – the portion about financial planning was pretty basic and we felt like we already knew much of what they said, and much of the buying the house portion was over our heads or did not apply to us. But they did hand out a good booklet on buying a house, which might be helpful in the future. We are still waiting to receive the packet of paperwork from Michael’s program in Salt Lake with his contract and the insurance information so that we can make some more accurate financial goals for the upcoming year. After the meeting at the school, we watched Enchanted with the Kearls when we went to pick up the kids, which was fun (even thought Michael now needs to borrow the movie to finish the second half of it since he fell asleep on their couch midway through).

On Tuesday Eli had his night out with Daddy. They went to the mall and got food from the Taco Bell dollar menu and then went to Barnes and Noble to read books together. Poor Michael said that he was falling asleep as they were reading, and it got to the point that Eli thought it was a game because he had to wake Michael up so many times as they read. But Eli loved it – he has been asking about when his night out with Daddy would be for the last couple weeks.

On Wednesday morning I had a group of girls and their kids over to make a playgroup schedule for the next couple months. We haven’t had a playgroup for a while, so I figured if I wanted to have it I would need to take charge. We got a schedule made and I am looking forward to taking the kids to the activities, especially to the ones we have planned at the playgrounds in the area once it gets warm enough out. After the planning meeting, Faith stayed and Amy came and we all had lunch together with all the kids. It was a lot of fun, even though the kids made it a little chaotic. That evening I took the boys to their swim lessons and Michael met me over there after he finished with his meeting at school so that I could go to the second half of the enrichment activity where they were making a bunch of baby quilts as a service project. I picked up Amy and we headed over there in time to help with cutting and tying a couple quilts. It wasn’t too late when we finished, so Amy, Faith, and I decided to stop at McDonalds for an ice cream cone (and some time out without any kids). It was fun to sit and talk, but then when we went to leave I saw that the brake lights were on on my car (I had driven Michael’s car, which I’m not used to driving, and must have turned the lights to the wrong notch – which was frustrating, because I was very careful to make sure that the headlights had turned off because Michael accidentally left them on the other day and the car had died). So, our jumped cables were in the van at home and there were none in Faith’s car, so we left the little car there and Faith gave us a ride home.

On Thursday, when Michael got home we headed over to pick up the car. We got there and realized that we had left the car keys at home and were quite frustrated that we would have to go all the way back to get them, until we realized that they were actually in my purse, so that was a relief. We got the car jumped and let it charge while we went inside and got the kids some food. Then we rushed home and I went over to my visiting teaching appointment after helping get the boys in the house.

On Friday I really wanted to get out of the house and go do something, so after dinner we met the Kearls at the McDonalds on National Avenue and let the kids play in the two-story play area there. The kids had a lot of fun, all except Katie who threw up all over Tyce’s lap (it was kind of a relief that Katie was already sick, because Isaac had been spitting up more than normal that afternoon and I had wondered if he wasn’t feeling well, but at least that way I don’t think we passed something to their family – not on Friday, at least). After stopping at Target to pick up a change of clothes for Katie and Tyce, they met us at our place and we put the kids down to bed so the parents could enjoy some games. I’m so glad that we have been able to find friends who are like us: people who enjoy to do things with the children, but are still willing to take their kids anywhere and do anything and are not ruled by the schedules of their babies. (If we could only do anything with friends when all of our children were awake, in good moods, and not demanding our attention, we wouldn’t have any friends).

On Saturday morning Michael had to go in and do rounds for his last call day at the hospital. I was proud of myself because I got up and made the kids a big breakfast of eggs and toast then deep-cleaned the kitchen, picked up around the house, and helped the boys clean up their room all by myself that morning. Michael got home around noon and put the other boys to sleep while I took Camden out for his activity with me (it was supposed to be his night out on Thursday, but we had to rearrange because of my visiting teaching appointment). I took him to the mall and we found some flip flops for the three older boys, and he had so much fun trying them on – he was taking little tiny, quick steps all around and acting really excited. (No, it’s not really flip flop season yet here in Milwaukee, but I’m hoping that it will be sometime in the next month or two). We took longer there than I had planned because I checked several other stores to see if I could find similar sandals that were less expensive, but didn’t find anything else. I was planning on letting Camden push one of those little kid-sized shopping carts when I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, but he fell asleep in the car so I dropped him off at home so he could sleep and went back out to get the groceries. After getting home, getting all the groceries put away, cutting up some chicken before freezing it for meals later on in the week, and having some dinner, the Hedgecocks dropped their boys off so we could watch them while they went on a date. The boys had un playing with each other, and then the Kearls came over and when the Hedgecocks returned we all played games together again. It was a fun night.

And Sunday went pretty well. This morning I made bread (I have just about resolved to be frustrated with somewhat flat bread from now on) and I made a cake for dessert (it’s really hard to make a cake while on fast Sunday and not be able to lick my fingers or anything). We went to church and the boys did well in sacrament meeting. Then, just before our Sunday school class ended we found out that Camden had thrown up. (Sorry, Sister Cook!) After cleaning up the mess in the hallway and getting all the other boys out of their classes and into the car, Michael took them home. The third hour of church was a combined lesson on genealogy that I stayed for. Afterwards I got a ride home with the Hymases and when I got home all four boys were napping and Michael had picked up around the house, put away the dishes, and prepared dinner (what a nice break to get home and not have to worry about any of that). He said that Camden had gotten sick in the car a little on the way home again, poor kid. Our home teachers came over to give us a lesson and then the Kearls came over for dinner. Michael made corned beef and it turned out very good. After dinner Michael had to rush off to his home teaching appointment, and while he was gone I did the dishes, cleaned up the water the boys splashed all over the bathroom floor while I was doing the dishes, out the boys in their pajamas, Tyce read them all a story, I cleaned up after Camden throwing up again, and they all went down to bed just before Michael got back. Then we played some card games and a round of Carcasonne. It will be nice after today that Michael won’t have such early mornings so we won’t have to cut our nights short so that he can get enough sleep to get up so early. We got to bed around 11:30 last night, and then Isaac woke up at 1:30am. I got up with him four times before Michael also got up and we finally got him back to sleep. The poor kid – whenever our boys get sick with a stomach flu (or whatever it is they have) I just give them Pediatlyte or Liquilytes to keep them hydrated, but no other foods until they seem better so they aren’t throwing up constantly. So, we ran out of the Liquilites last night, and we gave Isaac water, which did not make him happy. And then this morning Camden was very mad at me because I didn’t give him his cup of milk when he got up. I called a couple friends to see if someone would come sit with the boys while I ran to get some more of the Liquilites from the grocery store so I didn’t have to take sick kids out today, but instead Kim Morrison offered to go to the store and pick them up for me. That was so nice of her! So, now that we are all stocked up, we can hopefully kick this bug before it spreads to the older boys or Michael and I. Wish us luck and a quick recovery!

August is Here

This week Michael started his ambulatory medicine rotation (which doesn’t mean that he gets to go on ambulance rides, like it sounds – it’s just another outpatient internal medicine month). He was pretty sad to have to stop his dermatology rotation, but this month looks like it is going to be a good one. Michael is lucky and will often have the afternoons off on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this month, so that will be really nice. He will have lots of time to work on his application process and to spend time with the family. It was fun, on Friday he got home around 11 am and we had a great day. We took the boys swimming to the splash pool at Enderis Park. Camden has no fear of the water and loves to crawl right in towards the middle of the wading pool which is only a couple feet deep, but still too deep for him. And Kolby and Eli had a great time – I have never seen them actually swim under the water so much before at the splash pools. Eli kept jumping up in the air, landing on his bottom, and then laying back down with his face under the water. We all had a lot of fun there. Then we went to dinner because Michael got a free meal coupon for his birthday from Noodles and Company. And then we parked over by the Ronald McDonald House across from the medical school and went on a relaxing walk through the woods. Friday was a very fun play day for our family.

This week we also got several other things done. I finally had my wedding ring repaired at a jewelry store, since one of the prongs had bent a while ago. It’s nice to be able to wear that again. And I got my report made for my visiting teaching district. I have to say, I am glad to have this new church calling after being in the nursery for almost a year. On Wednesday we went for the family history enrichment group, which I messed up because I was thinking that it started later than it really did. So, we missed the rest of the group, but I did get some more family names prepared for temple work. We also went to the splash pool that day for playgroup, and the boys had fun playing with the other kids there. And Kolby and Eli both had their swimming lessons. They continue to do great – both boys are now good at doing “bobs” (dunking their whole heads under the water). It is also fun to think that Kolby will get to start a sport at the YMCA in a few months (they have to be 4 years old), and after we get back from our December-January Christmas trips Eli will be 3, so he will be old enough to join Kolby for his preschool classes at the YMCA too. That will be fun for them to go together. Well, on Thursday the boys also had their toddler art class, and I think this art activity was the most fun yet. They got to put their hands and feet in paint and paint on a big piece of paper along the fence. We stripped the kids down to their underwear so their clothes wouldn’t get painted, and most of them ended up painting their bodies too before we were done. For some reason, Kolby seems to like eating the paint – I couldn’t convince him to stop putting his paint-covered fingers in his mouth. Oh well, at least it was the non-toxic kind. (I posted pictures from the playgroup at the splash pool and the painting at art class down below).

And I can’t forget the big announcement: Michael’s research paper was officially published in the periodical, Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, on August 3rd. His article is titled, Language Barriers to Prescriptions for Patients With Limited English Proficiency: A Survey of Pharmacies, and I think it ended up being 11 pages long, including several charts that Michael made. If you would like to take a look at the article, you can see the journal online at: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/
Michael’s article is the fourth one listed on this main page for this current issue of the journal.

This week I also spent a while making a family budget in an Excel spreadsheet. I have a budget that will show the whole year, and it is linked to a separate worksheet for each month. We have made some predictions for how much money we think we will spend for things in the upcoming months, and then we can enter in information from our receipts and then compare the projected and actual expenses. At the end, I had fun setting up graphs that will show our spending for each month, and one for the rest of the year. (That made me think back to middle school when I would do a school papers and then my dad would teach me how to make a graph in Excel to go along with my paper, and I was always so proud because I thought my papers looked so cool).

Yesterday we got things done around the house and then we babysat for the Rahms in the evening. After they picked up their boys, we went shopping because Michael got some birthday money from his family. We went to Kohls and he ended up getting two nice dress shirts, two new ties, and a t-shirt. The boys were patient with us, because we ended up being there until 10 pm (which is way later than we usually ever have them out at night). On the way out, there were these cute stuffed dinosaurs on sale for $5 each and the profit from their sales went to education, so we splurged and got one for Kolby and one for Eli. They love them – Eli’s is a brachiosaurus that he named "Long Neck," and Kolby’s is a triceratops that he named "Sara" (like in his The Land Before Time movie). They slept with them last night, and haven’t stopped playing with them since (the dinosaurs even waited in the car for us while we were at church). It’s pretty cute. Well, church went well today. Camden actually fell asleep during the sacrament meeting, so it was the first time in a while that we didn’t have to leave during the entire first hour. Michael said the opening prayer, and several kids got up to share their testimonies today. Kolby liked watching the other kids, and he said that he could do that when he gets bigger. When we got home, the boys went down for naps, and Michael and I made a few changes to the page that I designed for his yearbook – so now it’s ready to submit to the school once we get back his professional portrait from the studio this week. And now Michael has fallen asleep on the couch while I’ve been writing this, so all of my boys are napping. Tonight should be fun too – we are going to the Hedgecock’s house for dinner, and they always have breakfast food for dinner on fast Sunday. Well, we hope that you have all had a good week too!

My Mistake

So, this morning I was all ready for the family history enrichment group that our ward has started so that moms can go work on family history at the church and we can rotate babysitting each others’ kids. I was planning on babysitting the whole time this week because the others let me take extra time last time we got together for this to get some temple cards ready, so I was all ready to take my turn watching all the kids for everyone else. I packed snacks for all the kids and took movies, and we were all set. I stopped at the post office on the way there, so I got there about 5 minutes late, and no one was in the nursery room.

I waited around next to the family history center for almost half an hour before I decided that no one else was going to show up, and I ended up taking the boys in to the family history center with me (I thought I might as well try to get some work done, since we had already made the trip out there). After almost an hour of telling the boys to use quiet voices, telling them that the chalk was only for drawing on the chalk board and not for the walls and chairs, and finally letting them run around in the hallway while I finished up for the last few minutes, I got the rest of our family names that I have been preparing this month run through the TempleReady program and submitted so they are ready to print all the cards when we go to the temple next week. I was thinking when we left that next time I go, I would just give a call to Kim Cannon, the other mom who is doing this family history enrichment group, and make sure she will be going, because it's too much work to try to get anything done in their with the kids so I probably wouldn’t go the next time if no one else happens to be going that day.

Then we went to the playgroup and met Amy Hymas there so our kids had fun swimming at the splash pool. When we got home, there was a message from Kim Cannon on the phone. I figured she was calling to apologize for not going today, until I heard the whole message, "Hey Stephanie, I guess I missed you at the family history group today, just wondering what happened, talk to you later." And while I put the boys down for their nap, I was trying to figure out if there was some way that we could have both been at the church building at the same time and still missed each other – like maybe she and her kids were in the bathroom when I went to the nursery room and then they left through the back door? So, I went to call her back, and I glanced at the calendar. Well, the group was supposed to meet at 9am – I had it in my head it was at 9:30am. I called her and apologized. I guess she waited around at the church this morning and finally left right before I got there. And no one else showed up. Oh, I felt bad – I usually don't make mistakes like that. Oh well. At least she was really nice about it. I guess we’ll try again next month.

June Already

This week Michael started his trauma surgery rotation, and it has been kind of a long week for us with his call schedule. With this rotation, they have 30-hour shifts at the hospital when they are on call, and little or no sleep for that entire time. Michael was on call Wednesday through Thursday morning, and then again Saturday until around noon today. So it has been a little tiring, but luckily it seems like we can get through any rough schedule for a month, and then we get to try out something new the next month.

We had a playgroup planning session at Brittney Winkler’s house where the kids got to play with a baby pool in the back yard while we made a schedule of weekly visits to playgrounds and splash pools throughout the summer. We had the boys’ toddler art class on Thursday, which they both enjoy. This week the theme was fish, and they made a fun picture that they got to glue sand and fishes cut out of different colored and textured papers. And that afternoon I went and helped my friend Sandra cut her son, Simon’s, hair. Simon is extremely afraid of having his hair cut, and it is somewhat of a battle to get it done, but it looks nice after we get it all cut.

Kolby and Eli each had their swim lessons this week too. Kolby is looking forward to two weeks from now when he will be starting a new swim class where he will be in the water with his class and we will watch him from the side. And I am looking forward to Eli’s new swim class in a couple of weeks that will be in the evening, as opposed to his Friday morning class we have been attending, so that Michael and I can switch off swimming with him sometimes.

And on Friday evening Michael took the boys for a few hours to the Fathers and Sons Campout, which I posted photos for in a post below. They enjoyed that, and then Michael was on call the next morning and he got home just before we got home from church. He tells me about the trauma surgeries – lots of motorcycle accidents, some car accidents, some gun-shot wounds, some drunken fights, and a few other things – and it sounds a lot like the tv show, ER.

So, my friends and I were going to have a garage sale this summer, but it never happened, so I’ve started trying to sell my garage sale items on craigslist. So, I had a toy kitchen that I bought at a garage sale a year ago for $1 – and the boys have really enjoyed playing with it, but lately they continually tip it over or use it to climb up onto the top bunk or to reach the lock on their closet door – so I sold it yesterday for $20. That’s a pretty good profit.

Well, after church today we went over to Tyce and Faith Kearl’s house to celebrate the blessing of their daughter, Katie, in church today. Michael was sad that he was on call today and couldn’t be part of the blessing, but it was nice to go over and visit with them afterwards, even though Michael was exhausted from getting 0 hours of sleep on his shift, and eventually fell asleep on their couch. Now we are home and Michael is trying to recuperate and rest while the boys are all napping. And this upcoming week we have several things to look forward to: our ultrasound will be on Tuesday, this will be Kolby’s last week of preschool until next Fall, and on Wednesday I will officially be 19 weeks along with this pregnancy.

We learned several interesting things this week: 1. Sidewalk chalk makes a loud fizzing noise if you dump it into a baby pool, 2. Michael has confirmed the fact that he is not interested in a career as a surgeon, 3. Kolby decided that he doesn’t like the taste of coffee (he took a sip of someone else’s drink when we were in the McDonald’s play area), 4. Michael has seen enough bad trauma surgeries lately to make him commit to never riding a motorcycle, and 5. When you live somewhere that the winter lasts at least seven months long, the summer sure does go by quickly – I can’t believe June is already here!
