So, I made Camden’s birthday invitation on the computer a while back, and I had originally set the date of his party for Saturday, September 25th. But we decided that the 25th was a pretty busy day with several other things going on, so we switched it to the Saturday before that, the 18th, at 6:30pm. I printed out the invitations and we handed them out to Camden’s friends a couple weeks ago. I felt a little bad for Camden because we had only had two people RSVP, but I figured that if two kids and their families came, that would be plenty for a 4-year-old’s birthday party. We cleaned the house really thoroughly, Michael and the boys hung up streamers and balloons all over the house, I made a couple cakes and decorated one with dinosaurs, and we were all ready. At 6:30 the boys opened the front door, Kolby started playing the piano by the front window (a new habit of his whenever we are expecting visitors), while we tidied up the last couple things around the house. At 6:45 we were wondering if even the two who had RSVPed were coming. Michael was asking me if we should call some people to see if anyone was coming, and I told him you can’t really do that. At 7:00 the boys had been waiting at the door for half an hour and no one had come. We felt awful. Then I had a thought and I went and looked at the party invitation. Then I called a friend Camden had invited, and confirmed it: I had somehow sent out the original version of the invitations with the wrong date on them. I couldn’t believe it! We told Camden that we’d made a mistake and he was just going to have a family party that night, and he just started balling, but as soon as we told him that he got two parties: a family party that night and a friend party the next week, he got really excited. We ate cake and the boys stayed up late to watch a movie before bedtime. And now it’ll be Saturday in a few days and I’ve got to make more cakes and clean the house again. Oh well, at least we don’t have anything going on in the afternoon at the same time as his party, so it’ll all work out.
