Eli's First Piano Lesson

Kolby started taking piano lessons when he turned 5 years old, and since he has done so well with it, we want to have all the boys start learning when they turn 5. When we moved here lots of people recommended a certain piano teacher, but we were told that she usually didn’t take students younger than age 7. Although Kolby was not quite 6 yet, I called and asked if she would consider teaching him, especially since he had been taking lessons for the last 9 months already before we moved here, and because he was starting to read some words. She made an exception and started teaching him, and she has commented many times about how well he plays for his age. So, I thought that since things had gone so well with teaching Kolby at a younger age than her other students, that she might consider at least giving Eli a couple of trial lessons when he turned 5. I asked what she thought about this, telling her that I wouldn’t be offended if she thought that he wasn’t mature enough to start lessons yet. She seemed very hesitant, and said that maybe she could start teaching him in the summertime. (I think that maybe she doesn’t want to make a habit out of making exceptions to her age limit). So, we’ll wait and see if she ends up teaching Eli later on. But we didn’t want to wait for him to start learning, so we decided to have Michael give him lessons on Saturday for now – which will not only allow Eli to start learning the piano and be that much further along when he does start with the piano teacher, but will also give him some special one-on-one time with Daddy. His first lesson went quite well, and he has been eager about practicing his songs each day this week. (We ask the boys to play each assigned song 3 times a day for practice, and Eli was very excited to tell me this morning that he played his song five times). I think that is one of the biggest reasons why starting lessons ate age 5 has been so good for the boys – they are still young enough that playing the piano is fun and exciting for them, and that practicing each day is enjoyable, not boring or un-cool. It’s fun to watch them learn. And several days this week Camden has also spent a good amount of time at the piano, playing his own little made-up tunes – he wants to be just like his big brothers.
