A Day At The Zoo

So, today the boys and I went to the zoo with Amy Hymas and Faith Kearl and their kids. It was a fun day, and everything was pretty uneventful until we got to the African animal area. We walked past the hippos and came to the enclosure for a large striped antelope called a bongo. The boys were standing near the fence, looking at the bongo, when Eli dropped one of his flip flops into the animal's enclosure. While I was trying to figure out how to get the sandal out, he quickly dropped the other one in too. I found a zoo worker nearby and she radioed for someone to come with a long hook to pull the sandal out. When the girl with the hook arrived, she seemed rather exasperated that she had to fish out two sandals, and not just one. But we got them back and Eli assured me that he understood that we shouldn't put anything in with the animals. I just kept thinking the rest of the time we were at the zoo how embarrassing it would be if he dropped his sandals into another animal enclosure a second time and I would have to call the annoyed girl with the hook back again to confirm her previous suspicions that I was a totally careless mother. I'm really glad that didn't happen! The rest of the day at the zoo went smoothly with no unusual events.
(No, the picture isn't real -- the sandals just fell on the ground by the fence).
