Labor Day: Stonesteps Beach

A couple weeks ago Courtland planned a hike & picnic to Black Canyon on Labor Day, but it's been so hot the last week that we were concerned about the possibility of high temperatures in that area so we decided to play it safe and head to the beach today instead. The boys couldn't make up their minds about which of our favorite beaches we should go to (it was a toss up between Ocean Beach south of the pier, the little beach south of the Children's Cove in La Jolla, and the Del Mar Dog Beach. Everyone was leaning toward the dog beach until we double checked the beach rules and found that dogs have to be leashed there through Labor Day, and can be off leash again on that beach starting the day after Labor Day -- and we didn't want to worry about leashes on the beach). So we told the boys we would just drive up the coast until we saw one that looked good and try out a new beach we hadn't been to before. As we were driving there, Michael looked up some beaches online, and suggested Stonesteps Beach because it wasn't supposed to have crowds. (It wasn't crowded for a holiday, so I'm guessing it's pretty empty on a regular weekday).

We didn't have any trouble finding nearby street parking, and walked down the long stairway to the sand.  Our friends recently gave us a skim board, so the boys enjoyed trying that out for the first time. And they all had fun boogie boarding & swimming. Courtland made brownies and brought them for his picnic.  Nana & Papa came and joined us the efor a while. And we all had fun building sand castles together.
