Cute Kids

When Kolby was about 5 ½ he asked me if he could start making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for himself and his brothers, and I let him (mostly because it was summertime then and he could make them on the patio table outside so there wasn’t much of a mess to clean up afterwards). He has been making lunches since then, and does quite a good job.

So, the other day Eli came up to me and asked, “Can I learn how to make lunches now because I turned 5 years old?” What a cute kid! I told him that if he let Kolby show him how, and if he cleaned up after he was done then he could make the sandwiches too. He started doing it, and has done great since then.

So today when I told him goodnight at naptime, I told Eli that he had done such a good job with making the sandwiches and practicing the piano today. And I told him that he is getting to be such a big boy. He got a proud look on his face and said, “And when I turn 6, I will want to be 6 when Kolby is 6. But when I turn 100 that will be ok, because then I will be a grown up.”

On Sunday we sat next to our friends, the Houks, during the first hour at church. The Houks have 8 children (7 of them adopted) who are all between the ages of about 8 and 16. And all of their kids have names that start with the letter ‘K,’ so I have to admit that I still haven’t learned all of their boys’ names (they have 6 boys). Anyways, when we sat next to them at church, some of our boys sat with the Houk’s kids. (Their kids are so good with our boys – kind of like fun older siblings, like when my little brothers come and play with our boys). So, on the drive home from church that afternoon Kolby was showing us a silly little drawing that one of the Houk boys had made for him with different animals on it. I asked Kolby which boy drew him the picture, and he said he didn’t know. And Michael said, “Well, why don’t you ask him his name?” Kolby looked up at us like we were making an impractical request, and answered, “I can’t right now Daddy.” I guess we should have specified that Kolby should ask his name next time he sees him.

Lately the boys want the hallway light left on while they are falling asleep, with their bedroom doors open a crack. We do that at night, but at naptime I usually have to close their bedroom doors because otherwise Camden and Isaac will get up and play and not sit down for long enough to allow themselves a chance to fall asleep. So, often at naptime Isaac will ask to have his door left open a crack, and I will tell him that we leave the door open at bedtime when it’s dark out, but we close it at naptime during the day. But yesterday when I tucked him into bed at naptime he said something different, and I couldn’t understand what he was saying. He repeated himself, and then I realized what he was asking me: “Mommy, can you close my door please? And can you lock it too?” Funny kid.
