So I am on call for my first time this year in my dermatology residency. This year I get to do call from home. I cover for all of the clinic patients, surgery patients, and any new consults (from the emergency department, inpatient hospital, etc.). I carry a pager, and if I get paged, I call back to find out what for, and then do it. It is a little random how many calls you get. The other two first year residents had 5 and 7 consults over their weekends and many phone calls. I got two phone calls yesterday, one for a clinic patient, and one for a surgery patient. As a result, at least so far, it has been a very nice and relaxing weekend.
Steph and I went to the wedding for Nancy Boone, a lady who goes to our church. One of the things that we volunteer to do is to visit the homes of each of the members of the ward (congregation) on a monthly basis, to share a message with them and to see if there is anything we can do to help. The families are divided up between all of the men in the congregation. So, Nancy Boone is one of the people that I visit. Steph and I were able to get a babysitter and enjoy the night out together at the wedding. The ceremony was short but nice. The bishop had collected a letter from the bride and groom about each other, and he read them to each other for the first time – it was really cute. Afterwards, Steph and I got a movie from Red Box and enjoyed watching while sipping on some nice hot chocolate.
Yesterday we got to sleep in until around 8am, which was so nice. The boys were up earlier and just played together well. We had what is becoming our traditional Saturday morning breakfast of home-made waffles with home-made berry syrup. After finishing the morning chores, we took the kids to the library to drop off their old books and to get new ones. Then we made a trip to the grocery store to stock up for the next few weeks. My parents sent a fun package with some new movies, so after dinner last night we sat down together as the whole family and watched Disney’s UP. It was really good…(SQUIRREL!)… and the kids really liked it.
Kolby has been learning about service recently, so on Monday for our family home evening activity we took the kids to Nancy’s house (the lady I home teach) and raked her leaves in her front yard to the curb. It was quite impeccable timing (though we didn’t know it while doing it), because it snowed that night after we raked. This is the first snow that we have had this year. It was so pretty Tuesday morning to wake up to snow. And I had so much fun shoveling the driveway. It warmed up and the snow melted by later that morning, so the kids weren’t able to play in it yet. It has since cooled down again for the weekend, but no more snow yet. One of Kolby’s friends from school told him that it snows every weekend in Rochester, so hopefully he won’t be too disappointed to have to wait for more.
Thursday night Kolby had a book swap at school. Each of the boys was able to take 3 books and then pick up 3 new ones. There was ice cream and a lady reading stories to the kids. They were so excited and had a great time.
