So, Isaac is growing up from a baby to a little boy now. He will be two years old in a couple months, but if you watch him climb on the equipment at a playground, you would soon see that he thinks he’s about eight. Other parents of small children often marvel at how active he is and how much control he has – while they are closely following their children as they toddle around the playground, Isaac is swinging from the handle bars at the top of the tall slides. He is definitely our little climber. He likes to climb on anything and everything – from the picnic table to the piano, the swing set to the stair rails. Michael walked into his room after naptime the other day and found him perched up in the window frame. Right now, Isaac is learning more and more words and we often have to remind him to stop yelling and to use his words, but he is getting better each day at communicating with us. Right now we have to try to figure out what he is saying whenever we ask him a yes or no question, because when he says yes, he says “uh-huh”, but when he says no, the word sounds almost exactly the same as his word for yes. So we have to figure out from the expression on his face (or from his reaction afterwards) if he meant yes or no. Oh, and his “angel hair” is still beautiful – he’s had a few haircuts, but I think it may still be a little while before I can bring myself to give him a short haircut like his big brothers – I just love those blonde curls!
Isaac can be very sweat and he can also be very mischievous. Although he can be good at playing independently or with his big brothers, he has always been more attached to Mommy and Daddy than the other boys were. He likes being around us, sitting in my lap or being carried when I will let him, and has lately been giving me sweat hugs, especially after he wakes up in the morning or after a nap. When Daddy leaves for work Isaac really wants to say goodbye first and watch him through the window as he drives away. He is also very active, so he sometimes wants to sit on my lap, but only for a few seconds at a time, and he will try to get up on my lap and back down again over and over if I am sitting down. Isaac has the most adorable, mischievous little grin. He is learning about following rules, and it can be funny (at times) to notice him start to do something wrong and then stop and look to see if we are watching him before he continues.
He loves to play outside and go on walks, and he has a lot of fun with his big brothers. He and Camden have been pal-ing around lately, and sometimes we see them out on the patio pushing each other on their tricycle. (And if Mommy ever allows herself to become busy doing something else for more than 10 minutes or so, Isaac and Camden have become quite the little partners in crime lately – having fun spreading such things as butter, peanut butter, and cereal around the house). Isaac likes to go down the slide and to climb on the seats on the swing set and swing in our backyard with his big brothers too. He also loves to help – he wants to unload the dishwasher anytime that he sees it open, even when the dishes are dirty. And he has been a big “helper” in removing the painter’s tape from the walls, (even before the painting has been done). If he sees a box of baby wipes that we forgot to put away, he likes to take the wipes out and he usually uses them to wipe his face or the floor. And he likes to throw things away for us. If I forget to let him carry the diapers out to the diaper pail with me, he can get pretty upset.
Lately Isaac has been showing me when he gets tired by laying down on the floor, usually with his brown fleece blanket, and even falling asleep on the floor a few times. Speaking of sleeping, he is now in the toddler bed, having grown out of (and started climbing out of) the playpen. He shares a bedroom with Eli. When he goes to bed, he likes to take a board book and a toy or stuffed animal to bed – usually “Big Baby” as the boys have recently dubbed it – a baby doll that my mom gave Kolby when Eli was born. I say that Isaac sleeps in the toddler bed now, but more often than not at nighttime he has taken up Eli’s old habit of sleeping on the floor right behind the bedroom door, so that if he talks or cries because he doesn’t want to go to bed, his mouth is right up to the crack under the door and we can all hear him loud and clear. I’d say that he does probably sleep in his bed more often than Eli did when he was younger, though.
Isaac, like all of his brothers, is a little tall for his age. I am now preparing for the fall and winter seasons by getting him size 2T and 3T clothes. Although we don’t get it as much since I cut Camden’s hair, people still ask if Camden and Isaac are twins, although Camden clearly looks larger than Isaac (at least to me). But they are both our little blondies right now. Oh, and it seems, at least for now, that Isaac is going to keep those bright blue eyes of his. Camden and Isaac used to have the same bright blue eye color, but when he turned a year and a half old, Camden’s eyes changed to the green-blue color like mine, so I assumed that Isaac’s eye color would likely change too. But he’s almost two now and they haven’t changes, so maybe they’ll stay that color forever.
Isaac had been quite the challenge for us at church lately. We would expect the first hour of church to be difficult, since it is hard for a child that young to sit still and quiet for that long. But since we moved he has been having a hard time in his nursery class at church too (which is usually a fun time, since it is a class with toys, books, other little kids, songs, and snacks). He didn’t have a hard time before we moved, so maybe he is still adjusting. But he usually cries hard for the first 10 minutes or so after we leave him, but at least his teachers tell us that after he calms down he does play with the other kids and seems to enjoy himself, so maybe it will get better after a while.
Isaac also really loves Courtland. He is learning to say all of his brothers’ names, and he will say something that sounds like ‘Courtland’ if I prompt him, but he usually calls him ‘Baby.’ Whenever he finds a diaper, bottle, burp clothe, baby blanket, or the baby’s hairbrush, he says “Baby” and takes it to Courtland. He will even hold Courtland’s bottle to feed him sometimes.
Isaac is really adorable and can be such a sweetheart – our family really wouldn’t be complete without him.
