Some of Our Favorite Books

Since the boys and I have had so much fun searching for books at garage sales lately, I thought I’d write a quick post about some of our favorite little kid books. I even took a photo to go with each book, but the photos on my cell phone got deleted, so I had to try to find photos online, since I wasn’t up for finding all the books and taking pictures a second time. Anyways, here they are. The boys have lots and lots of favorite books, but these are a few that I’ve noticed they especially have liked over the last few years.

Blue Hat, Green Hat
(All of our boys laugh and laugh at this simple book – we are now on our second copy of it).
Clifford: Where is the Big Red Doggie?
(I couldn’t find a picture of the cover of this book, but this is of one of the pages).

Eating the Alphabet
Cute pictures and some fun new fruits and vegetables to learn).

Clifford’s Animal Sounds
(Honestly, I don’t know what it is about this book that appeals to the boys, but they have all seemed to like it when they were around Isaac’s age)

That’s Not My Puppy . . .
(We just found this at a garage sale a couple weeks ago, and it is so cute!)

Elmo & Friends: Look and Find
(This is a well-used book at our house).

I Spy
All of these books are great, although I like the board books best because they last longer than the paperbacks in our house.

Dr. Seuss books
Although my favorite was always The Lorax, and Michael really enjoys reading Dr. Seuss’ tongue twister books to the boys, and the boys enjoy all the Dr. Seuss books, Hop on Pop has been a clear favorite – mostly because Kolby can read it all by himself and it was really the first book he started to read on his own.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
I had this book when I was little, and now my boys love it too.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Camden likes this book, and since the words are so simple and repetitive he says them and thinks he can read the whole book by himself. I will get any book by Eric Carle.

1001 Things To Spot . . .
Lately Kolby and Eli really like books where you have to search for certain things in the pictures. Once we happened to get one at the library that was called, 1001 Wizard Things to Spot, and Eli spent hours looking through it. So, when I found 1001 Things to Spot on the Farm at a garage sale, I had to get it. I’d like to find several more of these.

And we’ve started reading the Boxcar Children series together, which is a nice activity to do with the older boys. And I enjoy it too since I don’t remember any of the stories, not that they have especially exciting plots, but they’re fun for the boys. (Plus, you can always seem to find these books at garage sales).

And then there are some that are extra special to me, not so much because my kids love them, as because they were mine growing up and I loved them (not that my kids don’t like them). Two of these are written by Robert McCloskey, my all-time favorite, Blueberries for Sal, and another favorite from when I was little, Make Way for Ducklings. (Although the one on my kids’ bookshelf is a newer version, I do still have my original copy of Blueberries for Sal, minus the cover).

I also loved any book written or illustrated by Steven Kellogg – what great pictures. And a couple more that I still have from when I was young are Gregory the Terrible Eater and Stone Soup. And there’s a set all about different animals and plants that I liked as a child, which I’ve been able to find at different sales over the last few years: Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones, The Reason for a Flower, and Animals Born Alive and Well. I’m sure there are others that I’m not thinking of, but these are the ones that we have been able to find so far.
