Butter Battle

So, the day that Grandma and Aaron were arriving I decided to try to get all the books onto the bookshelves in the study so that I could get all the boxes out of that room (that’s where the hide-a-bed couch is that we had Grandma sleep on, so I wanted to free up a little more space in there for her). I couldn’t have Camden and Isaac in there while I was organizing the books because Isaac especially is a very good “helper” lately and it would have taken twice as long to get the job done. So, I shut the study door and let them play with the toys in their bedrooms while Kolby and Eli helped me unpack the boxes of books. That was definitely a mistake – I came downstairs to find Camden and Isaac both covered in butter, especially Isaac who had it all spread through his hair. Camden had a butter knife and was spreading butter all over the house. The fridge and several of food containers from the fridge were covered in butter, and every surface in the whole downstairs had big globs of butter on them – the floors in every room, the walls and doors, the oven, cupboards, the steps and handrails on the stairs, the silverware drawer and the silverware, the new dining room table and chairs, the piano, and the rocking chair. Unfortunately we get the little tub of butter, so it’s really soft and easy to spread. Fortunately we have wood floors throughout the house, and although it took a long time for me to wipe up all the butter and then mop all the floors, the only thing that I really had to scrub was the seat on the rocking chair and it came off of that without too much trouble.

Since then, Camden and Isaac have kind of become partners in crime. Camden gets into something he shouldn’t, and then Isaac gets really messy with whatever it is they’ve gotten into. They can both now take down and/or climb over the baby gate, so that doesn’t really help anymore. Yesterday I wanted to try to trim a bush near the front of the house so that you could walk off the end of the porch without having to duck under the branches, so I took all the boys out in the back yard to play while I worked on that. After rounding up the little boys a couple of times when they kept opening the gate and running out of the yard, I finally took some zip ties and zipped the gate shut so they couldn’t run out. Then I found the two little ones after they had gone into the house and gotten into peanut butter. Camden only had it on his hands, but Isaac had it smeared all over his shirt, his eye, and his hair – something makes me think that he didn’t do all that to himself. Anyways, I guess these messes are the price I pay for trying to get things done around here. But these two do remind me a lot of Kolby and Eli when they were around these ages, so at least I know that they will eventually grow out of it.

Ouch. I think you guys need a copy of Dr. Seuss' Great Butter Battle book. It'll scare them out of playing with butter!

I laughed so hard at this post only because I can sympathize completely. Get anything done? Yeah, right. I spend as much time repairing the damage as I did "getting something done." Nathan & Katie are especially enamored with peanut butter & with dumping every single item of clothing on the floor--well anything from a drawer really.
