A Quick Update

So, things are looking up. They took Courtland off the oxygen this morning, which is good. And they told me that he has been gaining weight. The ideal weight gain goal at this point is about 30 grams a day (which is about an ounce), but with babies with RSV their hope is just to keep them from loosing weight, since that often happens with RSV. So, the doctors this morning told me that they were very pleased (and surprised) with his weight gain – that in the 36 hours we had been at the hospital he had gained 130 grams (as of his weight check last night), which is huge! And when they weighed him this morning they told me he was up 180 grams from when we arrived here. So this is really good news. They said that as long as he can keep his oxygen levels up and doesn’t need help with that, and if he keeps gaining weight so well, they will watch him for another day or so and then we can head home. His oxygen levels have been going a little low today, but suctioning seemed to help with that a little while ago, so hopefully the oxygen won’t be needed. I am still pumping, and still not getting anything, but they keep encouraging me to continue and that they think my milk supply should come back (although I admit I am nervous about the idea of having to pump every 2 – 3 hours, feed the baby a bottle every 2 – 3 hours, and get everything else done with Courtland and all the other boys once we get home. But the attending doctor was suggesting I try keeping up the pumping for a week and then see how it’s going and talk with the pediatrician at a weight check and decide what to do with it from that point. So I guess I can make that work. A week sounds do-able). So, things are looking really good. He seems to be improving quicker than anyone here expected. We’ll let you know how things turn out.

I pumped for Jade until she was 8 months. I only had Cody to take care of also, so I can only imagine how busy you are, but it's not as bad as it sounds. If you have a double pump you have your hands free, so I would try to fold cloths or something to be productive during the pumping.

Guys, I am so sorry! I wish I were near you guys and I would help take the other boys. I'm glad to hear that things are going better for Courtland - I just KNOW he has it in him to be a good chunky baby! I hope the rest of you feel better soon, too.
