So I’m back on the internal medicine wards. I just finished week 2 of 8 (I have 2 months in a row of medicine). My days start around 6 am then I’m there until around 2-8pm, depending on my shift. I have a “golden” day where I don’t get new patients, then a short day where I get new patients until noon, and then 2 long days where I can get patients until 6pm. This month of medicine seems much smoother than the last time – I guess it helps to know a little about the ropes.
Some examples of what I’ve seen this week: a man with metastatic rectal cancer that is getting palliative chemotherapy; a lady that had very low sodium levels; a guy with acute kidney failure from his water pills; a guy who was bleeding from his esophagus; and several people with blood clots in their lungs.
I had off Thursday so I volunteered in Kolby and Eli’s preschool class. They are divided into 4 groups and take turns at four different activity stations. I was in charge of the water station where they had a container with soapy water and plastic fish for fishing. They also had a station to color a Thanksgiving picture, one to play a game called Break the Ice, and one where they made candy turkeys. It was really fun to go with them.
Yesterday Steph went to the cannery and came home with 3 cases of oats for our food storage. We went over to a friends house to watch the pitiful U of U vs. BYU football game. There were probably about 50 people there including kids, with tons of food and drink, and we had so much fun with everyone there. Our new friends the Barkers, who live across the street from us, were there with their kids and so we got to hang out with them.
I have been able to get home at a nice time most of the days this week. Steph and I have enjoyed playing some Zelda together on the Nintendo Wii, or taking the kids out for some fun. I got to watch the boys Wednesday night while Steph went visiting teaching, and then on Thursday night while she took Camden out for his night out.
Steph’s family got into town last night. They are here this whole next week for Thanksgiving. My family is coming on Wednesday. Somehow I was able to get Thursday off so we’ll be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family. It is so fun to have them here.
